People have been drawn to the Western North Carolina Mountains for centuries. They came for the crisp, clean mountain air. They came for the lakes. They came for the rivers and streams. They came for the mild, “healing” climate.

The land they enjoyed is very much the same land we enjoy today. This is home to hundreds of thousands of protected acres. Catatoga lies in the shadow of the immense Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests and numerous state parks.  (It is, in fact, bordered on two sides by Gorges State Park, North Carolina’s newest state park.)  It is land we can pass on to future generations to enjoy. And it’s land that we can all enjoy today.

The Western North Carolina Mountains accommodate just about every sort of outdoor recreation imaginable. There is adventure around every turn of countless roads and mountain trails. Hikers and mountain bikers can take short spur trails to waterfall lookouts, or take on longer, more challenging routes for miles through rugged terrain.  White-water rafting, boating and fishing lure many to the area’s pristine lakes and streams. Every day presents a new opportunity to go sightseeing, horseback riding, or perhaps to simply enjoy a scenic drive. It’s little wonder that National Geographic Adventure recently named nearby Asheville America’s Number One Adventure town.

Golf has long had a home in these mountains and remains a part of the weekly routine for many residents and visitors. The climate accommodates almost four full seasons of play on a wide variety of courses on every imaginable terrain—from wide river valleys to rolling hills--challenging both the weekend amateur and the scratch golfer alike.  Catatoga Club members have special golfing privileges at Sky Valley Resort and Country Club, another Merrill Trust Group community less than an hour away just south of Highlands.  Public access is also available at nearby Sapphire National Golf Club and at several courses in Brevard, Hendersonville and Asheville.

In the wintertime, make sure your skis and snowboards are handy. Many of the best slopes in the Appalachians are within a two or three hour drive of Catatoga.
